Your Local Children’s Centres are here for you. We are friendly one stop shops for all families in Brough and Howden and the surrounding areas from pregnancy until your child turns nine years of age.
Having children is rewarding and exciting but we know it can be one of the toughest jobs around, which is why we are here to offer support and advice.
All of the services the Centre provides are free. Please see below for a full list of weekly activities in and around Howden.

Talk Time and Let’s Get Chatty
Speech and Language support sessions for children needing a little extra help and encouragement, full of top tips for parents and carers as well as encouragement to talk and sign from the team.
These are both 6 week structured programmes which are by referral only and include home visits from the Children’s Centre team to discuss and assess your child’s speech and decide which program is best suited. Talk Time focuses on pre-verbal skills and development in preparation for speech, whereas Let’s Get Chatty focuses on speech and includes more confidence building, encouragement and pronunciation.

Infant Massage
Massage is beneficial to all babies; long before babies are able to speak they communicate with the world around them through touch. The power of touch to soothe and heal is instinctive. If a baby cries we often cuddle them or stroke their back or skin. Massaging your baby is an extension of this natural impulse it promotes bonding and attachment. By joining other parents in the group you will be able to share experiences and discuss those early days with support for feeding, sleep and soothing.
Infant Massage is a 4 week program delivered at both Brough and Howden Children’s Centres and is completely free. We do have long waiting lists and try to prioritise children by their age so no-one misses out. Please call the Centre to be added to an upcoming course.

Portage Group
The Portage Group is returning and will be on a Friday morning; this is by invitation from the portage service only and will be delivered by Rachel Ellis-Robinson for children and families receiving support from Portage.

Introduction to Solid Foods
Are you preparing to introduce your baby to solid foods? If so the Children’s Centre can support. We offer interactive sessions for parents and carers to discuss the best ways to introduce foods, which signs to look out for and what types of foods to try. This is ideal for parents of children 4-5 months old and will always follow currents NHS guidance. Remember weaning should not start until your child is around 6 months old, can sit unaided, support their own head and has the hand/eye coordination to be able to bring toys to the mouth.

Family Links

Children are rewarding, stimulating and fun, but looking after them can be stressful and challenging. The Nurturing Programme helps deal with those challenges so that you can have a calmer, happier family life. The Autumn term programme starts at Brough Children’s Centre on 27th September 12.45-2.45pm for 10 weeks (with a break for half term). For more information and to book your place please call Brough Children’s Centre and speak to Sam or Beth the programme facilitators.
